被迫离职的音乐学院教师沈廓（刘子枫 饰）在夜总会偶遇很有音乐天分的学生陈科（宋艺 饰），得知他因违纪将被学校开除，亲自跑去找校长（叶小铿 饰），恳求他让自己收下这个学生。他用独特的、有悖学院理论的方式教授陈科，为此他还跟自己的父亲（舒适 饰）产生分歧。同学崔艺岭（俞洛生 饰）从国外回来，他与沈廓同为沈父崔自轩的学生。崔艺岭动员沈廓出国深造，但临行前沈还是放不下陈科，他义无反顾地投入到对陈科的教学中。时光荏苒，转眼到了汇报演出的时刻。舞台上，当陈科演奏的帕格尼尼大提琴曲令观众如痴如醉之时，沈廓被查出患了绝症......。A true indie film through and through, Elephants takes an authentic look at a modern relationship in a "slice of life" style, peeling away intimate layers to ask the question: how do you know when someone's right for you or rather, when it's time to move on?
