该剧改编自作家李娟同名散文集。生长在阿勒泰的汉族少女李文秀（周依然饰）一心在大城市中追求文学梦想，却屡屡碰壁被迫回到老家与开小卖部的母亲张凤侠（马伊琍饰）相依为命。在结识哈萨克少年巴太（于适饰）之后，文秀渐渐发现了当地之美。。When Joan’s husband dies, she is shocked to discover he had invented an elixir which makes the drinker look young again. Sharing it with her two friends, the three women paint the town red but soon discover that they are no longer equipped to be young in the modern world.。影片讲述了印度殖民地发生的故事，表面上是一部纯粹的战争片，实际上灌注了作者的情怀，表达了他对当时被殖民统治的印度人民的同情。。
