John Ellman (Boris Karloff) has been framed for murder by a gang of racketeers. He is unfairly tried and despite the fact that his innocence has been proven, he is sent to the electric chair and executed. Dr. Evan Beaumont (Edmund Gwenn) retrieves his dead body and revives it, as part of his experiments to reanimate a dead body and discover what happens to the soul after death....。民国十一年，溥仪（姜文 饰）与婉容（潘虹 饰）结婚。1932年，溥仪与婉容在日寇挟持下来到长春伪满洲国“执政”，做起了日本人的傀儡。由于受人挟持与监视，溥仪的日子不好过，婉容更是度日如年，她跟溥仪完全没有正常的夫妻生活，毎日靠吸食鸦片麻醉自已。她的苦衷引起侍卫李越亭（刘威 饰）同情，不久，二人越轨致婉容怀孕。太监李长安（正华 饰）发觉后密报溥仪，溥仪闻讯雷霆大怒，他把婉容打入冷宫，并把李越亭折磨致死，婉容知道后精神失常。数日后，溥仪迎娶中学生谭玉玲（傅艺伟 饰），并封其为“祥贵人”。但生性正直的谭玉玲这时却引起了日本人的注意......。
