1977年，江南某地。“水上飞”张秀英（王丹凤 饰）由于生孩子过多，体质已大不如前。丈夫丁志富（虞桂春 饰）是生产队长，思想观念守旧，虽有三个女儿，但他一心想让秀英给他丁家生个男孩。妇女队长新梅（洪融 饰）在丈夫丁明（丁嘉元 饰）的支持下，实行了计划生育，却遭婆婆丁大妈（谢怡冰 饰）反对。高大伯（程之 饰）的儿子阿龙（何麟 饰）热爱农科，是个有名的“种子迷”，高家长辈却担心儿子迷上种子而忘了娘子。丁有理（韩非 饰）的女儿兰珍（张力维 饰）私下里和阿龙相好，并支持阿龙的种子研究。丁有理知晓后极力反对独生女儿跟阿龙来往，新梅知道后，上门给丁有理做说服工作，经过新梅的努力，每个人对计划生育有了全新的认识......。It’s summer and a group of young women head off for a week to a house in the country in order to rehearse a play.
